SEAGULLS 04:10
SEAGULLS Send another mayday Conditions changing Monday Go to sleep my angel dreams come true The monkeys on the mountain Have built a Cristal fountain Better get a message back to Timbuktu There are no dreams worth saving Close your eyes the tv's pay-per-view There is no price worth paying For all the lies that you believe are true So pack up your jalopy Hurry make it snappy The storm is coming in for you and me In the sea the dolphins snap at you And cry before they turn and say goodbye In the sky the seagulls black and blue The only thing that they can do is fly We passed another milestone And crashed into the red zone But the pressure builds no matter what we do There are no thieves no virtue This caravan is everyone you know We got it all our own way And opened up the bomb-bay Shut your mouth boy soldier dreams come true In the sea the dolphins laugh at you And cry before they turn and say goodbye In the sky the seagulls black and blue The only thing that they can do is fly Oh oh oh oh oh oh All rights msamson/abacus songs 2021

NSA 04:03
NSA You could've asked me anytime What was on my mind But you didn't I could've told you many times Just to draw the line But I never saw the signs Things were moving much too fast Some things aren't meant to last The words just come out wrong When the feelings are so strong Cast your mind back a while Pull an early file from the summer Under all the happy smiles There's so many trials and struggles we can't see We're having so much fun The dream has just begun How can things go wrong When the feelings are so strong? One of these days you'll come back and make yourself a home Until that day arrives you'll just be out there all alone Whatever I say all my words will be lost upon the wind And I've got to accept that we will never start again Start again Chop me out another line We can cut it fine till tomorrow Don't know where the money goes But I know for sure that it doesn't grow on trees Stay in bed don't watch the clock Tell your boss you took the knock Come back where we belong Where the feelings are so strong One of these days you'll come back and make yourself a home Until that day arrives you'll just be out there all alone Whatever I say all my words will be lost upon the wind And I've got to accept that we will never start again Start again Never start again All rights msamson/abacus songs 2021

MY SECRET LIFE Pressing buttons changing clothes The buttons press and mercy flows Giving time to nobody hoping to show empathy A past a future present tense On either side a bloodied fence So find a record flip the groove this minute could amount to truth My secret life has a past unknown An island in the no-fly zone My secret life is warmer than the cold inside of you Burn the records scatter clues Seconds hide a bitter truth My bed is cold this amp is warm this guitar speaks after I'm gone My secret life has a life its own A person I have never known My secret life is warmer than the cold inside inside inside of you All rights msamson/abacus songs 2021

PROMISES 03:26
PROMISES Look at all these angels look at all these fools look at all these kids trying to make some new rules Keeping out of danger sticking to their dreams from the gutter to the open sky there's nothing to be seen But promises you can't buy and promises you can't keep Promises will make you laugh and promises will make you weep No-one's got the answers but we all know the truth We cut down all the trees and found a dragon's tooth Out of sight horizons and love exchanged for gold We want to live forever but can't stop growing old And promises you can't buy and promises you can't keep Promises will make you laugh and promises will make you weep But life is built on promises And time is running out I've made a promise I can't keep the future's turned a funny shape this sunset warms a memory that turned to ice inside of me Blue and yellow fuchsia gold the beauty as the day gets old I'm trying hard to forgive myself for all the stupid lies I told But life is built on promises and time is running out Take your broken promises cause love conquers all All rights msamson/abacus songs 2021

TDYG 04:15
T D Y G Long ride hold tight Nothing lasts forever but the sky Just know no fire Can burn much brighter than your life tonight I spy game-time Another bad moon rising in your eyes Leave now take flight Follow last year's seagulls to the sky Throw down your gun Take another crack at the sun Your last day is miles away This journey's just begun Keep chasing down your dreams There's no second time around Don't wait for permission Or get your feet stuck in the ground Your done likewise With going out each morning in disguise Looks like clear skies Let's get these wagons rolling while it's dry All rights msamson/abacus songs 2021

SUNDAY MORNING Waking up on a Sunday morning Papers didn't come cold breakfast on my plate Thinking back only yesterday she loved me Never mind she took the pictures that I hate And she said it was me But I didn't agree Well at least it's communication Starting at the end Going back to being friends Anyway that's the situation Looking out over Sunday morning All night long the rain's been falling down Draw the blinds and the light comes streaming into my eyes from the Sunday morning sun Take a ride down to the beach Things aren't so bad after all Like the sun love seems out of reach Just like love I feel I'm bound to fall Looking out over Sunday morning all night long the rain's been falling down Draw the blinds and the light comes screaming into my eyes From the Sunday morning.. Sleeping alone in a world of your own fabrication Can give you the feeling that nobody cares what you do You'll get through the week if you keep fighting the freak in your imagination Don't forget that the Sunday morning sun shines for you too All rights msamson/abacus songs 2021

KINDNESS 03:22
KINDNESS I'm gonna fill up the car with all this stuff that I don't need And take it to the tip down-town That book on how to grow all my own food from seed Won't be any good to me now Though it won't be the answer I know it'll give me a little more space Don't you believe in kindness any more? When did you stop caring about the truth? What gave you the reason to open your door To let the cold air of these lies freeze you? Let's fill up the bus with all these freaks that we don't need And drive it off the end of the pier This sacrifice I'll make for us so you don't bleed any more than you fear No it won't be the answer But at least it'll get us a little more space Don't you believe in Kindness any more? When did you stop caring about the truth? Did you lose your reason and open the door and let the cold air of these lies freeze you? Why don't you believe in kindness? Someday you'll be sorry Someday you'll be sorry Someday you'll be so sorry All rights msamson/abacus songs 2021

TOO LATE 03:02
TOO LATE You take a book off the shelf Order fairtrade coffee find a seat by yourself While I'm still catching my breath I take a step towards you but you're with someone else And I'm tired I don't look great I was so sure you'd hang on for me But I was too late I'm done with blaming myself I turned a brilliant corner now I'm good for my health I'm reaching for the future and my feet feel the grass I'm rewired finally straight Feeling so sure you'll come back for me It's never too late Another time we're always going somewhere Past the signs along the path to nowhere There's no defence from the soul I'm staring at my pizza till my coffee is cold We took the Earth for ourselves Put Mother on the market but she'll beat us by stealth She's on fire heating debate Swear on the stars we could have had it for free But now it's too late All rights msamson/abacus songs 2021

about

It's impossible to explain how this record came to be made. Music was always there, but so was chaos. Lives and relationships pushed and pulled by dysfunction, addiction and the darkness of depression. When Michael left us in 2016, Colin and I were devastated. He'd been our greatest inspiration and the funniest, wildest and warmest friend we'd ever known. We played Sunday Morning at Mike's memorial and shared stories of implausible but true shenannigans with him on both sides of the Mersey and down in North Wales.

Colin had been travelling the World playing drums and I'd been raising kids and writing songs, learning to use a recording studio and entertaining diners with song every weekend in Liverpool. The drink had become a serious problem for us both. An occupational hazard. I'd stopped just before Mike passed and Colin knew he had to. This part of our journey was over but the next was unclear.

We headed north, to the Outer Hebrides, to wait tables and make money to clear our debts. The Temple Cafe was a stone igloo on a track that ended at the Atlantic Ocean. The caravans we lived in rocked and rolled in the nightly gales. We lived on meusli and the fresh wholefood from Gail's kitchen. Gail also had a drumkit. Like Lee Marvin in The Gunslinger, Colin began to practice again. Without a straight line or a flat surface in sight The Cafe was a perfect space to play music. The random stone surfaces were both dead and bright. Jamming for parties on days off was a real pleasure for us and the Temple's regulars. Colin said it rivalled the sound of some of the best studios he'd worked in.

Returning from a weeks holiday in Spain I brought back some recording gear and instruments. I'd been writing songs for fifteen years or so and a crazy plan to start recording them was beginning to take shape in my increasingly clear mind. Our days started at ten in the cafe, serving food to the cyclists, birdwatchers and camper van enthusiasts who populate Harris through the summer. They ended, sometimes at five in the morning, with a drum track stuffed onto a warm hard drive. Five months passed quickly. Exhausted and wedged we left in early October, Colin to Liverpool to become first call for anyone needing a drummer, and me to SW Scotland to sort out the hours and hours of recordings to make the skeleton of the LP.

We both felt that we were in a better place. Recovery was real. Music had saved us...again, and somehow we felt that Michael was still around, listening in, laughing with us. We returned to The Temple in 2017 for round two. Colin's chops were back and I had a pretty clear idea what to do with the songs to turn them into a “proper record”. We worked our arses off. Apart from visits to town on our day off to raid the charity shops for DVDs to watch in our swaying caravans we barely left the cafe. One of those DVDs – The Last King of Scotland – had a fantastic African funk soundtrack which gave us the idea for the percussion arrangement on My Secret Life. Colin played everything in the cafe's kitchen to create the eclectic layered rhythms of an authentic West African percussion troupe. We played the roughs to Gail and Reuben who owned the Temple and to some of the folks we'd befriended. The responses were encouraging. Maybe we really were making a record. By the time we left for the second time we'd got the arrangements and basic tracks down for fourteen songs. Now what? I mixed. I mixed some more. Something eluded me. Colin agreed. Our work still didn't sound like a record. Michael would have agreed too.

Colin knew tons of wonderful musicians in Liverpool. My brother Daniel, a classically trained composer, scored some string parts. Some fine players from Liverpool's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra realised them expertly. A choir was organised by Perri Alleyne-Hughes, veteran of countless high profile vocal extravaganzas and an amazing singer in her own right. Michael's extraordinary talent on bass, now lost to us, was recreated by not one, but four, exceptional and completely different bassists. Laura Jane, an orchestral player, sunk the foundations into the sea-bed of dark mystery that is In My Head, and also played the gorgeous flutes on Throw Down Your Gun. Hugo is a jazz player who brought warmth and real depth to the simple lines of Kindness. On Sunday Morning, Jim dug deep into his compendious knowledge of classic pop to craft a part of rare originality and playfulness. The weaving, winding, loping and popping low end energies of For So Long and Promises were Roger's contribution. His confidence and clarity made the complex sound simple. Michael would have been pleased with the results. Closer now. More like a record. Perri's choral arrangement for Throw Down Your Gun, and it's beautiful execution by her with Dionne, Jo and Aziz, lifted the song into the realms of art. It was wonderful to experience the transformation.

Maybe the origins of this record aren't important. Maybe there's just the simple inevitability that love and music are energies with their own story to tell, and we give voice to it as best we can, surviving the turmoils of life, striving to keep our side of a bargain we don't fully understand. Without the support of family and friends nothing can be achieved. Without suffering there's no authenticity. Without time there's no truth. We thank you for buying this LP, and for believing in us enough to want in on a story that has literally taken lifetimes to tell. msamson January 2021
